The bent knee lateral step exercise is a great movement to help develop your upper thighs (quadriceps). It is also a great exercise to help activate your cardiovascular system and improve coordination. For those of you who can’t squat or do lunges this is a great exercise because you control over how low you want to go. In addition, the bent knee lateral step is a very simple exercise to perform. Simply move your foot in and out while keeping your knees bent.
Start Position

Position for bent knee lateral step exercise
Stand with your feet two to three apart. Clasp your hands in front of you at chest level. Bend at the knees until you feel a slight contraction in your upper thighs. Keep your head level and eyes forward. Remember to keep your back straight and chest puffed out proud.
How to perform the bent knee lateral step exercise
With your knees bent, move your left foot inward towards your right foot shifting your weight on your right leg. Once your left foot touches close to your right foot, laterally shift it outwards by about 2 feet. Follow this lateral step, back and forth until the prescribed amount of repetitions until the set is complete. Repeat this movement for your right leg.
Breathing
Breathe in as you step move your foot inwards and breathe out as you laterally shift it outwards.
Important points for the bent knee lateral step exercise
· Bend your knees until you feel a slight contraction in your upper thighs.
· Keep your head level and eyes forward. Try not to look up or down.
· Keep your shoulders square and proud, don’t lean forward or round your upper back – keep your back nice and straight.
