Cross leg touches are a great exercise for developing the mid to lower portion of the abdominal muscles. It’s a nice variation of the crunch and it adds a bit more versatility to your ab exercise program. I usually add cross leg touches to the end of my ab sequence because I find it’s a great finishing move that allows me to fully activate those deep ab muscles. It may take a bit of getting used to but once you get the rhythm down it is a great exercise for strengthening and toning your mid to lower ab muscles.
Below I will show you how to do the cross leg touch exercise for the abs.
Position for the cross leg touch
Lie with your back flat against the floor. Keep your hands by your sides or on your upper thighs. Keep your head level and eyes fixed on a spot on the ceiling.
How to perform the cross leg reach
In a simultaneous motion, lift your leg and arm, using your abs to lift your shoulder off the ground and lightly touch your lower leg (just above the ankle). Allow your arm and leg to return to their starting position. Lift your opposite leg and using your other arm, reach up (using your abs) and touch your other leg.
Important notes for the cross leg touch
· Don’t rock your body to propel your motion. Use your abs to crunch up with each leg touch.
· Don’t look at your feet, keep your head level and looking straight up
· If you can’t touch your ankles, do the best you can to touch without causing too much discomfort
· Try and keep constant tension on your abdominal region
