The Standing Knee Raise and Crunch Exercise

The standing knee raise and crunch exercise is a great low impact movement that will help strengthen your core in addition to improving your cardio conditioning. It’s a relatively easy movement to perform and it doesn’t require a lot of space or any type of special equipment.

The great thing about the standing knee raise and crunch exercise is that it is not an overly difficult exercise to perform so it can be performed by beginners and advanced trainers alike. The key to the standing knee raise and crunch exercise is to keep your core engaged throughout the entire movement and place more emphasis on your abs while “crunching” downwards.

Left Knee Raise

Position for the standing knee raise and crunch exercise

Stand with your feet placed two to three feet apart. Retract your shoulder blades and puff your chest out proud. Keep your back straight and your head level.

How to perform the standing knee raise and exercise

To start, clasp your hands together (left hand over right) and raise both hands over the right side of your head. Bring both hands down while at the same time raise your right knee. Slightly “crunch” your upper body downwards while touching your knee with your hands. Raise your hands back upwards and lower your knee towards the ground and repeat for the prescribed amount of repetitions. Perform the same motion for the left side of your body.

Breathing

Breathe in as reach upwards and breathe out as you crunch down.

Important points for the standing knee raise and crunch exercise

·         Remember to keep your core engaged throughout the entire movement. Squeeze your abs as you crunch downwards.

·         Try not to look down or up as this will cause you to lose balance. I suggest picking a spot on the wall (that’s level with your eyesight) and stare at it for the duration of the movement.

·         Try and create a fluid, continuous movement moving your arms and legs in unison.
